Programme Overview

Sasol offers bursary programmes aimed at developing South Africa’s future talent in STEM fields. The programmes provide comprehensive financial and developmental support for full-time university studies in engineering, science, and technology.

Upon successful completion, students may be employed within the Sasol Group through Graduate Development Programmes. Both Mainstream and Mining bursaries carry work-back and/or pay-back obligations.

Bursary Categories

Mainstream Bursary Programme

Supports students pursuing their first undergraduate degree in full-time university studies in Engineering or Science. Non-STEM bursaries are reserved only for children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders, or candidates from Sasol fence-line communities.

Mining Fence-line Bursary Programme

A performance-based bursary aimed at students studying towards a Bachelor’s Engineering/Engineering in Technology qualification. Eligibility is limited to South African citizens.

Minimum Requirements – Mainstream & Mining

  • South African citizen by birth.
  • First undergraduate degree (for Mainstream bursary).
  • University students applying for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year must have an average of 60% for all modules.
  • Must be below 25 years old at the time of application.
  • Must have completed Matric within a year of application, or currently completing Matric if applying for 1st year.
  • Combined household income below R600,000 per annum.
  • Acceptance or provisional acceptance at a recognized South African public university or university of technology.
  • Non-STEM bursaries are reserved for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders, or fence-line communities.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance.
  • Technical Maths or Maths Literacy only – no exceptions.

Work-Back / Pay-Back Obligation

All bursaries carry a work-back and/or pay-back obligation. Students are expected to contribute to Sasol post-graduation in line with the bursary agreement.

Note: Applications for the 2026 academic year are currently closed. Interested candidates should monitor Sasol’s official bursary portal for updates.

  1. Prepare certified copies of required documents including Matric certificate, ID, and academic transcripts.
  2. Ensure proof of household income is included.
  3. Submit an online application through the Sasol bursary portal when applications open.
  4. Include supporting documents for non-STEM bursaries if applicable (e.g., proof of Sasol employee status, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholder, or fence-line community residency).
  5. Complete the application form accurately and submit before the closing date.
