
Marine Training: Bursary Opportunities
Programme Overview
The Maritime Departments of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), which operates all tugs, pilotage services and dredgers in South African ports, is offering bursaries to individuals interested in pursuing a career within the maritime industry.
The bursary supports students registering for maritime-related qualifications at approved South African Universities of Technology.
Fields of Study
- National Diploma (ND): Maritime Studies (Navigation)
- National Diploma (ND): Mechanical (Marine) Engineering
Approved Institutions
- Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) β ND: Maritime Studies or ND: Mechanical (Marine) Engineering
- Durban University of Technology (DUT) β ND: Maritime Studies
Minimum Requirements
- Matric with good results in English, Mathematics and Physical Science.
- OR currently studying towards S2 in Mechanical Engineering.
- OR currently studying towards S2 in Maritime Studies.
In line with Transnetβs Employment Equity Policy, preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged groups, with special emphasis on women.

- A covering letter outlining your reasons for wanting to pursue a career at sea.
- Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) including personal details and educational background.
- Certified copy of Grade 12 results (or latest results if currently in Grade 12).
- S1 results if currently studying ND: Maritime Studies (Navigation) or ND: Mechanical Engineering.
