
Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme
Programme Overview
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a South African government initiative managed by the Department of Basic Education. The programme aims to attract young South Africans into the teaching profession by providing full-cost bursaries to students studying towards a teaching qualification at approved public universities.
In return for funding, bursary recipients are required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they received funding.
What the Bursary Covers
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation (including meals)
- Prescribed books and learning materials
- Monthly allowance
Minimum Requirements
- Must be a South African citizen.
- New applicants must be 30 years old or younger.
- Must be a Matric learner, current university student, or graduate pursuing a teaching qualification.
- Must commit to teaching at a public school upon completion of studies.
Work-Back Obligation
Recipients are required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they were funded under the bursary programme.
How to Apply
- Visit the e-Government portal at www.eservices.gov.za.
- Register by creating an account and providing your personal details.
- Log in using your registered username and password.
- From the e-Services menu, select Education.
- Choose Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme.
- Enter the OTP (One-Time Pin) sent to your registered contact details.
- Accept the Terms and Conditions.
- On the dashboard, click on the 2026 Application button.
- Complete all required sections of the online application form.
- Accept the declaration confirming that all information provided is correct.
- Submit your application.
Applicants will receive electronic feedback via email regarding the status of their application. Only complete applications submitted before the closing date will be considered.
